I recently watched all three seasons of Deadwood dvd (http://www.collectcheapdvd.com/products/368-Deadwood-Seasons-1-3-DVD-Box-Set.html), having only seen (and loved) half of Season 1 upon it’s original showing.
It’s profane. It’s complicated. And it feels oh so real.
As westerns go, none are as gritty, realistic, or populated with such richly erratic, complex, and exceptionally portrayed characters, as Deadwood is. The character of Al Swearengen, portrayed by Ian McShane, is a particular stand out.
No Law at all in Deadwood dvd set (http://www.collectcheapdvd.com/products/368-Deadwood-Seasons-1-3-DVD-Box-Set.html), well not to begin with, anyway. Deadwood is the centre of immorality and indecency (hey, what prospector’s haven isn’t?). The writing, direction, acting, everything about this show is relentlessly good. It never falters, it sticks to it’s guns, never dumbing down for the viewer. The dialogue used is so poetic, it often sounds like Bill Shakespeare has written it. Even when you don’t really know what’s going on, the characters are so intriguing and watchable, you’ll still be hooked.
A total reworking of an entire genre, television doesn’t get much better than this.
