As a straight male in his 50's who has a few lesbian acquaintances but no direct insight into lesbian life, I have to admit I'm hooked on The L Word tv show (http://www.collectcheapdvd.com/products/559-The-L-Word-Seasons-1-6-DVD-Box-Set.html), as is my 17-year-old daughter. The characters are the key, their sexual orientation really irrelevant to the show's appeal, for me, at least. I have read a number of comments from lesbian fans of the show that tell me that the show's creators are presenting real characters, if a bit on the glamorous side. (Hey, folks, it is television, after all.) It is the blend of drama (and yes, some melodrama) and humor, fantasy and reality, extraordinary situations and everyday life that bring me back week after week, waiting to see what's going to happen next. While I find most of the characters appealing -- Tanya is a snake and Tim lost me when he walked out on Jenny and left her stranded in a Tahoe motel -- I especially enjoy Alice and Dana and continue to hope the two of them will end up together. I have watched the characters and their relationships evolve over the course of the series so far and if it isn't totally realistic, it's closer than most of what is offered as "reality" television. I didn't recognize most of the cast's names when the series began, and those I did (Jennifer Beals and Pam Grier in particular) had never been among my favorites, but after almost a season and a half they are like family members.

Yes, The L Word dvd (http://www.collectcheapdvd.com/products/559-The-L-Word-Seasons-1-6-DVD-Box-Set.html) doesn't have any really butch main characters -- yet -- and I can see that some lesbian viewers might feel that this is a failure to reflect the full spectrum of lesbian life, but I can't help but believe that the show's focus will broaden as it goes on, hopefully for several more seasons. By attracting as wide an audience as possible in the beginning they are making it that much more likely that the show will run long enough to allow that kind of growth.

My greatest disappointment in the first season was Bette's failure to smack Faye Buckley across the face with her daughter's porn tape. On the other hand, it reflected the liberal community's real-life failure to go for the jugular when under attack from the right, especially the religious right. With luck, both The L Word dvd set (http://www.collectcheapdvd.com/products/559-The-L-Word-Seasons-1-6-DVD-Box-Set.html) and the real-world liberal community, gay and straight, will stop permitting the conservatives to define the terms of the debate on every issue.

Cheers to Showtime and the creators and cast of this series for presenting an enjoyable, engaging series.
