Flashpoint is about an elite tactical unit, called the Strategic Response Unit (SRU), within a Canadian metropolitan police force (styled on the Toronto Police Emergency Task Force). The SRU are tasked to resolve extreme situations that regular officers are not trained to handle including hostage-taking, bomb threats and heavily armed criminals. Ed’s got a wife and cello-playing son. But it’s clear that the brotherhood always comes first. At one point he announces that he is missing his in-laws’ 40th anniversary to go to a colleague’s retirement party and, with his partner, invokes a Gilbert and Sullivan number about the demands of police work to justify himself. His group defuses bombs and talks people out of suicide and negotiates hostage crises and kidnappings using sniper fire, flak jackets and, more dramatically, code names and jargon. Lane is the one who has to make a split-second decision during the hostage situation and living with his choice isn’t going to be easy. While Jules is young and eager to get her shot (no pun intended) at being responsible for the primary sniper duties on the scene, Lane appears to be a bit worn down by what he does for a living. What a man! All the Crimes remind the SWAT team that criminals are human, and their children might even hug them, and we’d all be better off loving the ones we’re with.
